Elon Musk's Cybertruck Faces Challenges as Tesla Nears Debut

Jun 14, 2023

Elon Musk is set to unveil Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybertruck, a unique and angular pickup truck made of unpainted stainless steel. This launch will test Musk’s ability to execute his vision and deliver Tesla’s first new passenger vehicle in over three years.

Bringing the Cybertruck to market has been a challenging journey, marked by design changes, cost overruns, and uncertainties caused by the pandemic. The recent departure of CFO Zach Kirkhorn, who played a key role in managing company costs, adds to the complexity.

The Cybertruck was designed to disrupt the traditional pickup truck market with its triangular profile and bulletproof body. However, some industry observers express concerns that its unconventional design may have limited appeal to buyers, and the costs of production could impact profitability, especially since margins are already under pressure.

Investors, on the other hand, remain optimistic, believing that the Cybertruck will rejuvenate the Tesla brand and bring new excitement, as Tesla’s lineup is perceived as older compared to its competitors.

Tesla has faced manufacturing challenges with the Cybertruck, opting for stronger and heavier stainless steel instead of the typical sheet metal used in car bodies. Deliveries of the new pickups were initially expected to begin in small numbers by the end of September, with gradual production increase until 2024.

During Tesla’s recent call with analysts, Musk avoided discussing pricing and delivery schedules. He acknowledges the complexities of launching a new vehicle and understands that the production ramp will depend on the slowest elements of the supply chain and internal production.

Tesla’s previous experience with ramping up production, particularly with the Model 3 sedan, has been described as “production hell” by Musk. The Cybertruck has faced challenges since its initial unveiling in November 2019, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and the need to prioritize other more certain products.

As Tesla prepares for the debut of the Cybertruck, the coming months will determine if Musk can deliver on his ambitious vision and create a successful entry into the pickup truck market.
